Three blighted, abandoned buildings will be torn down on the 500 block of Eastern Avenue SE in Grand Rapids’ Baxter neighborhood to make room for a 65-unit apartment building for low- to moderate-income residents.
The project is being led by the Inner City Christian Federation, a Grand Rapids-based nonprofit housing developer, and is designed to provide quality, affordable apartments in a part of the city that has seen “rapid” increases in rent and home prices, said Ryan VerWys, ICCF’s president and CEO.
“We believe that these buildings, the beauty with which we’re building them, will reflect the beauty that’s been in the neighborhood for a long time – the beauty of the neighbors, the people who’ve invested much of their lives, their time, their talent in that community,” he said.
