Love in Action
After nearly thirty years of service with ICCF Community Homes, John still sees the work of building affordable homes and thriving neighborhoods as a true labor of love.
When asked what home means to him, John recalls Robert Frost’s famous words: Home is a place where, when you go there, they have to take you in. For John, home is a place of community, belonging and love. Home is a place where kids are nurtured, meals are shared and friends gather to both grieve and celebrate. All of these tender small moments create a sense peace and safety.
A former staff member of 24 years, John now volunteers through the Community Homes Initiative, restoring neighborhood homes preserved for affordable housing. “I want to give back to my community and serve the people who will live in these homes,” he says.
John believes that love is worked out in practical and tangible ways through ICCF. “Buildings alone don’t convey grace. Love takes action. Love makes commitments. Love brings peace.” He is one of many volunteers working with the Community Homes Initiative, offering skilled labor to restore houses and help lower costs so more families can afford a place to call home.
“It’s been a privilege to be a part of ICCF and it’s a privilege now to continue to help out.”
This Advent, as we reflect on the meaning of love, John’s story reminds us that love shows up with work gloves and open hands. It shows up for neighbors, for families, for the place we all call home.
