A Home Where Joy Can Grow
For Melissa, rebuilding a joyful life started with finding a safe environment to call home. Fleeing domestic violence meant leaving behind everything familiar, often staying in hotels just to keep her children off the streets. “All I needed was that little extra help so that I was able to hold my family together,” she says.
That help came through ICCF’s Step Forward program, which assists individuals and families who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness in finding and maintaining permanent housing. More than housing, she found people willing to walk alongside her as she rebuilt her skills and confidence. “I wasn’t allowed to have a computer or cell phone,” she says remembering the control she lived under. “ICCF helped me get a resume together. It taught me I was capable.” With that support, Melissa began rebuilding not only her life, but her sense of self.
But the most powerful transformation happened inside the four walls of her new home. Melissa’s children began to thrive, joining school teams, inviting friends over, and laughing freely again. “I want my children to always remember that mom’s house is a safe place. It’s a peaceful place not just for them, but their friends and their families.”
In that peace, joy took root. Melissa finds peace in the everyday moments of her home, but joy when her children walk through her front door. “When they have that smile on their face,” she beams, “that’s the most heartfelt joy I can have.”
She adds, “I love being that mom that everybody feels safe at her house.”
In this Advent season, Melissa’s story is a testament to the deep joy that grows when fear gives way to peace, when survival becomes thriving, and when home becomes a place of healing and hope.
