A Home Built on Hope

For years, Juanita and her sons rented a small two-bedroom apartment and dreamed of a place to truly call their own. But as a single mom navigating an unpredictable housing market, that dream often felt out of reach.

“We outgrew our apartment, but even a two-bedroom apartment these days costs as much as a mortgage,” Juanita shared. “And the owners can raise the rent at any moment. I thought it was going to be kind of impossible.”

She longed to see her hard-earned money go toward something lasting, a mortgage that would build equity, stability, and a future for her family. But the journey was not easy. In a competitive market, every “no” felt heavy. “Every time I placed a bid, someone outbid me. I got discouraged. I didn’t have the extra funds to compete.

Still, Juanita held on to hope. She refused to let discouragement win. Her persistence led her to ICCF Community Homes and the Individual Development Account (IDA) program, which provides matched savings and education for first-time homebuyers.

ICCF gave me the tools I needed to become successful,” she said.

When the long-awaited call came that her offer had been accepted, Juanita could hardly believe it. “Oh my gosh, I was ecstatic! Just an overabundance of joy. The day I got my keys, I went to the house and sat there for a while, soaking it all in. I thought, This is my home. My children’s home. We can make memories here.

What began as a spark of hope has now become a foundation for something lasting – a home, a legacy, and the promise of generational stability.

“It’s truly an opportunity for generational wealth for me and my children. If I can do it, you can do it. Don’t give up. Keep going. It’s worth it.”

Every home begins with hope. This Advent, we celebrate stories like Juanita’s, stories of persistence, faith, and community that remind us what’s possible when hope takes root.
